ISFED demands the immediate release of the organization's employee, Shota Narsia, from the temporary detention facility

On the morning of December 1, 2024, at 01:39, according to verified media footage, Shota Narsia, the Senior Researcher of the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), was arrested near the intersection of Zubalashvili Brothers and Lesia Ukrainka Streets while participating in a peaceful demonstration.

Following the deployment of allegedly, gas by riot police, Shota Narsia was standing on the street when special purpose unit officers launched an unprovoked attack. Allegedly, officers struck him forcefully in the back of the head, causing him to fall. As he attempted to get up, the officers repeatedly struck his leg and dragged him a significant distance across the ground. When he attempted to escape, they pursued him, cornered him against a wall, and subjected him to a severe physical assault, resulting in documented injuries to his kidney and spinal regions.

Despite clear evidence of his non-resistance—as substantiated by media documentation—Shota Narsia was subsequently arrested. During a legal consultation with his attorney, he reported experiencing extraordinary verbal harassment and psychological intimidation, particularly after the officers identified his professional affiliation with ISFED.

At present, Shota Narsia is being held in a temporary detention facility. A Public Defender's Office representative also visited him to monitor his condition. The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to employ disproportionate force and conduct unlawful detentions despite widespread condemnation of such tactics against peaceful protesters.

We hereby demand:

  • The Special Investigative Service conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into the alleged police misconduct, examining instances of power abuse and taking appropriate legal action. Our organization stands ready to provide comprehensive documentation and testimony regarding the officers involved in these potentially unlawful actions.
  • Immediately transfer Shota Narsia to an independent medical facility for a comprehensive medical examination and secure his unconditional release from the temporary detention facility.
