Statement of NGOs in reaction to attacks on UNM office

Based on media reports, on December 9, 2015, shots were fired at UNM office in Dedoplitskaro at night, smashing office windows, damaging walls and office furniture. The landlord, who lives in the very same building on the second floor, said that he learned about the incident in the morning of December 10 and reported it to the police.

ISFED’s coordinator interviewed the leader of UNM’s regional branch of Dedoplitskaro, Levan Baghashvili. He stated that the shots were fired at night and fortunately, no one has been hurt.  Office of Majoritarian MP Zaza Kedelashvili is located inside the very same building. According to the UNM representative, Dedoplistskaro police department has launched subsequent criminal investigation.

UNM regional offices were attacked several times in November 2015. One office door was shut will nails and hammer while another office was vandalized with paint. We urge the law enforcement authorities to conduct timely and objective investigation into the above acts of violence.

Violent actions hinder peaceful and stable environment for political processes, jeopardizing not only normal working environment but also safety of opposition members.

In light of the foregoing, we urge the government to ensure stable and peaceful environment in the country ahead of the elections, and call the law enforcement authorities to investigate all incidents of violence in a timely, objective and comprehensive manner.
