Election Campaigns of Political Parties on Facebook for the 2021 Municipal Elections in Georgia

Similar to the 2020 parliamentary elections, the 2021 municipal elections were held during the Covid-19 pandemic, which increased the role of social media in the election campaigning in Georgia. The importance of the social network in the electoral context is indicated by the results of the August-September representative survey of the Georgian population by the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, according to which the Internet and social media are the most important source of information about elections after television. According to the survey, 45% of the population receives information about elections from social networks at least once a week (or more often).

The International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy has been monitoring political campaigns on Facebook, as the main tool of digital campaigning in Georgia, since 2018. For the October 2, 2021municipal elections, the organization also observed the official campaign of political parties on Facebook. This report presents monitoring findings on the main official Facebook pages of 13 political
parties running in the elections from September 1 to October 30.
