Statement of NGOs about the Recent Developments in Villages Bordering the Conflict Zone
According to May 29-31, 2013 reports, the Russian occupation forces installed a wire fence along the occupation line of Tskhinvali Region in the villages of Ditsi, Dvani and Perevi. Most of all, we condemn the kidnapping of three citizens of Georgia and the acts of illegal deprivation of freedom that occurred in the last few days.
Kidnapping of civilians and the moving of the occupation line leads us to believe that safety and constitutional rights of civilians residing in the conflict zone and adjacent territories are completely disregarded. In particular, freedom of movement and other civil and social- economic rights guaranteed by the Constitution are curtailed.
We call upon the occupation regime to release Georgian citizens immediately and put an end to violation of basic principles of international law and the commitments undertaken by the
2008 Ceasefire Agreement.
We urge the Georgian authorities to utilize all national and international mechanisms available for protecting safety of citizens of Georgia.
We urge international organizations and diplomatic corps to inform the international community of violations of the 2008 Ceasefire Agreement provisions, kidnapping of civilians and occupation of the Georgian border.
