The non-transparent ads of the Anti-Corruption Bureau and its head on Meta’s platforms

The Anti-Corruption Bureau and its head, Razhden Kuprashvili, are placing ads on Facebook and Instagram non-transparently, in violation of Meta’s rules. The mission of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, as defined by law, is to support the fight against corruption in the country and oversee political finances. Therefore, such a practice by this agency and its head is particularly problematic.

According to Meta’s rules, advertisers posting content related to social issues, elections, or politics are required to indicate that the ad concerns one of these topics. This ensures transparency regarding the origin and amount of money spent on the ad, as well as the advertiser’s contact information. It is important to note that a social issue is defined as any sensitive topic that is the subject of intense public debate, could influence election outcomes, or relates to existing or proposed legislation.

Despite the fact that the ads by the Anti-Corruption Bureau and its head clearly qualify as political or social ads under Meta’s policy, none of them have been properly declared on the platforms to this day. As a result, Meta has repeatedly suspended some of the non-transparent ads posted on the official pages of this public agency and its director due to rule violations.
